When residential roofers are hired to install or replace a gutter system, they don’t simply take any length of gutter and start working. There are several factors that contribute to a successful gutter system installation.
For starters, you have to consider the right size of gutter because there is no one-size-fits-all solution. You also have to choose from several material choices, from aluminum to steel, vinyl to copper. Then there’s the shape: half-round or K-style. Another factor is the choice between a sectional and a seamless gutter system.
Gutter Size
Gutter size is the measurement of the top opening, which can range from 4 to 6 inches. Downspouts are usually either 2×3 inches or 3×4 inches in diameter.
To determine the right size of gutter for your home, your roofers have to know the density of rainfall in your area. That’s why it pays to hire a local gutter contractor, as they already have a solid idea of what they’re dealing with, weather-wise. However, you can also find your answers on websites dedicated to gutter supplies.
A larger gutter system is important for areas that experience a lot of rain. It’s also a match for a steep roof pitch. If you’re located in an area surrounded by plenty of trees, larger gutters are better because they won’t clog easily when leaves end up in them.
Thickness
The thickness of your gutters depends largely on the material. Of course, thicker gutters are more durable, though they also cost more. If you are looking at aluminum, the thickness is between .019 to 0.32 inches. When you choose copper, the thickness is measured by weight. Heavier means thicker. A 20-ounce option is available; it’s sturdier than a 16-ounce copper gutter. Copper is the most expensive option, but it’s also the most durable and best-looking.
Sections
Gutters can be seamless or sectional. Sectional systems made of aluminum need sealant at the seams to prevent leaks. Re-applying sealant is part of gutter maintenance for this type. As for sectional steel and copper systems, the seams are soldered together.
Seamless systems are better, though they might cost a bit more. To install seamless gutters, your contractor will bring a special machine on-site for cutting stretches of gutter that perfectly match the length of the roofline, eliminating the need for seams.
