Some home improvement, repair, or replacement projects are not as intrusive as others. You can start them without having to bother planning where you’ll be staying in the meantime. One example is gutter installation, and another is deck building. These are by no means small projects, but they are mostly done outdoors without affecting the indoor environment of your home.
There are other projects, however, that you should plan earlier and more carefully because the work might require your household to include temporary accommodations in your plans. During such projects, you should be available to sign for orders and to observe the progress, so it’s a good idea to have it done during a weekend or on a day when you can stay home.
One of such projects is the replacement of your windows, particularly if you’re replacing all the windows in your home.
Preparing for Window Replacement
- Confirm the installation date with your contractor or their representative.
- If you have special instructions, such as saving an old window, attach a note on the wall next to the window that’s about to be replaced.
- Window replacement is invasive, so it’s best to set up temporary accommodations, such as with a friend or relative. You can have your family and your pet stay there while the project is ongoing. This is particularly important if you have small kids or a baby.
- Clear the driveway for the window technicians’ van.
- Remove hanging pictures, paintings, or anything suspended on your walls. Move furniture away from the windows. Remove window treatments such as drapes and blinds.
Day 1 of the Project
- A complete home window replacement project typically takes up to two days. On the first day, the foreman or lead technician will inspect your old windows. This is when you can make corrections if you ordered the wrong window.
- A set of installers will remove the old windows and another will start installing the new ones, depending on how many technicians are going to work on your project.
- Expect the installers to place drop cloths or plastic sheets to protect your carpets, floor, appliances, and furniture. If they don’t, ask them to do so.
- You can expect up to 10 windows to be replaced in a day, depending on the size of the windows and their location.
- Your window technicians will clean up before they leave. If disposal of the old windows is part of your deal, they are likely to have a dumpster waiting for the construction waste. They will ask you where you want to keep the old windows if you decide to keep them.
Day 2 of the Project
- If there are windows left to be removed and installed, your installers will begin early on the second day.
- If exterior trim or cladding installation is part of your contract, the technicians will soon start working on it.
- The technicians will perform a final test and inspection of each window as some members of their crew begin to clean.
- Unless a third day is needed to complete the project, the lead technician or foreman will now walk you around your home and demo your new windows. They will also instruct you on the operation and some basic maintenance.
